Highland Park man who escaped jail charged

A Highland Park man was charged this week in connection with escaping police custody at the city police department.

David Johnathan Soward, 29, was arraigned Monday through 30th District Court on multiple counts including an escape from jail through violence, disarming a peace officer and possessing a taser, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said in a press release.

Judge John Bennett assigned him a bond of $50,000.

Soward is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on Dec. 23.

His attorney, Melodee Melisa-Rose Jefferson, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Authorities said Soward assaulted an officer while police were escorting him from his cell on the 14100 block of Woodward Ave around 6:06 p.m. on Dec. 12.

Soward allegedly took the officer's taser and aimed it at the officer, striking their leg without effect, prosecutors reported. He also allegedly refused to surrender when officers outside the jail area commanded him to do so and pointed the taser at another inmate.

Officers entered the jail area and tased Soward to detain him again, according to the release.

The Prosecutor's Office did not indicate which charges Soward had been in police custody for prior to the incident.

Online court records with the 30th District Court show multiple open cases against Soward. Records for the most recent case, raised by the Automobile Club of Michigan, shows a summons and complaint issued as of Oct. 30.

The four other open cases appear to be traffic-related, including a misdemeanor charge on June 12 for operating with a suspended, revoked or denied license.

Soward is the latest of several Michigan defendants accused of fleeing police.

Three Lansing men were arrested Monday for fleeing police and crashing a stolen car in Brighton on Interstate 96.

Detroit police shot an 18-year-old on Dec. 10 after suspects drove off from approaching officers on the city's west side.

A Lincoln Park man was also recently charged for allegedly spitting blood on a police officer's face when he was arrested after a car chase on Dec. 4.
