Mariah Carey 'devastated' to cancel N.J. Christmas show hours before performance

Alas, the Queen of Christmas will not be spreading holiday cheer tonight in Newark as planned.

The global superstar, who has become as much a part of the holidays as shopping, presents and Santa Claus, announced that she had to cancel a series of shows because she has the flu.

Carey, 55, who was approaching the final dates of her Christmas Time tour, first announced on Tuesday that she was canceling her Pittsburgh show that night at the PPG Paints Arena because of illness.

"It breaks my heart that I unfortunately have to cancel tonight's show," she said in posts on social media. "I love you all so much."

Carey, 55, followed up that announcement with a Friday update on her next shows at the Prudential Center in Newark and UBS Arena in Long Island's Belmont Park.

"Newark and Belmont - I wish I had better news but unfortunately I'm still sick and have to cancel the shows tonight and on Sunday," Carey said. "I'm really devastated about it and appreciate your support."

The singer's New Jersey show was scheduled open at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13 at the Prudential Center.

Pete Albietz, a spokesman for the Prudential Center, tells NJ Advance Media that Ticketmaster ticketholders will automatically be issued refunds. Anyone who purchased tickets from a third-party reseller like SeatGeek, StubHub or VividSeats should reach out to the point of purchase.

Carey is next scheduled to perform at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn Tuesday, Dec. 17 -- the last date of the tour.

The cancellations may be all the more heartbreaking because this Christmas is a special one for Carey's monster hit "All I Want For Christmas Is You."

This year marks the song's 30th anniversary.

The hit holiday tune, released in 1994, has demonstrated remarkable longevity, returning each festive season to claim the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 -- in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 just this week.

At the start of each November, with Halloween barely in the rearview mirror, Carey "defrosts" the song for another Christmas with her signature catchphrase: "It's timmmme!!" -- which she sings in high falsetto.

This year, she celebrated the song's inevitable return to the charts with an Addams Family-themed video (see below).
