The Step Foundation Inc. has been selected for a $2.5 million grant from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.
The funding will support the creation of affordable transitional housing for people in early recovery from substance abuse, bringing the city closer to its goal of expanding housing opportunities for all residents, according to a city of Terre Haute news release issued Monday.
"Affordable housing is essential to building a thriving and inclusive community, and this project will help fill a significant gap in our housing stock while offering a pathway to hope and stability for our neighbors," Mayor Brandon Sakbun said.
The Next Step Foundation is a faith-based nonprofit located in the Farrington's Grove neighborhood. It plans to use this funding in partnership with Thompson Thrift to expand its housing offerings.
This includes constructing duplex homes on existing lots owned by the foundation and acquiring and rehabilitating multi-unit apartment buildings near their main campus.
These efforts are intended to create safe, affordable, and supportive housing environments that are essential for individuals navigating early recovery.
"The city of Terre Haute has been an instrumental partner in helping us to build our newest facility for pregnant and parenting women and with this IHCDA funding, we can now provide transitional housing units for those in early recovery that need affordable housing and ongoing services to assist in their recovery journey," said Dana Simons, executive director of Next Step.
"Safe and affordable housing combined with ongoing support services is a critical step toward sustainable recovery, and we're excited to expand our impact in Terre Haute."
