PRATTVILLE - A renovation project at Prattville City Hall means a change of meeting places for the City Council.
And the municipal court, and the planning commission, and board of zoning adjustment and the list goes on.
The council chambers host more than council meetings. That central auditorium is home to Prattville Municipal Court proceedings and other government boards and committees. City Hall was built in 1974, and the building has undergone major renovations in the past. But the chamber is showing its age.
There's been minor cosmetic work done over the past 50 years, but the chamber itself has remained basically untouched since The Brady Bunch was must-see TV.
Bienville Construction Services LLC, of Mobile, has been awarded the $453,195 bid. Work is expected to take about six months.
So, where will the council, court and other boards meet in the meantime? Just across West Main Street in the old Hancock Bank building. The city bought the closed building last year and has been renovating the space.
The move will happen the second council meeting in January. The council regularly meets the first and third Tuesdays of the month.
"We're a little bit ahead of the work in that building," Gillespie said. "We were thinking about Doster (Memorial Center), but it has events scheduled and we would have to set up and tear back down for every council meeting and other meeting.
"Moving temporarily to the bank building just works out better for everyone."
The City Council meetings are posted on YouTube, so the new space will have the technology installed to continue that process.
