Lions OC Ben Johnson appears to be eyeing Bears head coaching vacancy

With the unbelievable success the Detroit Lions' offense has had in recent years, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has been one of the hottest names among head coaching candidates in that span -- and that is not going to change in 2025.

We saw Johnson's genius at work once again in Week 16 against the Chicago Bears, as the Lions dropped 34 points on their division rival, with one of their touchdowns coming on a play that saw quarterback Jared Goff fake a stumble before throwing a score to tight end Sam LaPorta.

With their impressive showing on Sunday, the Lions' offense broke franchise records for most points and most touchdowns scored in a single season, and Detroit sports the No. 1 scoring offense going into Week 17.

The only thing that could make Johnson moving on worse is if he were to take the Bears' head-coaching vacancy, and it appears he's at least considering it.

According to ESPN's Eric Woodyard and Courtney Cronin, Johnson is expected to interview for the Bears job in the offseason.

That report comes on the heels of NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reporting earlier in the day that the Lions offensive coordinator is "intrigued" by Chicago's job.

With the Bears having a promising young quarterback in Caleb Williams, it comes as no surprise that Johnson may have some interest there. But, man, seeing him go to the Bears would be a tough pill to swallow for the Lions and their fans.

Back in November, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Johnson would be very careful about what job he takes and would avoid joining a dysfunctional team.

"He's going to be very careful. I don't know that he desires to head in the division to go to a place that you're talking about the dysfunction that has existed within that organization," Schefter said of Johnson possibly going to Chicago.

That's important to note because the Bears have seen no shortage of dysfunction over the years, something that was once again abundantly clear with the way the Matt Eberflus firing went down.

Eberflus was cut loose the day after his timeout debacle against the Lions in Week 13. However, Eberflus met with the media that day before being fired, which was bizarre to say the least.

But the Bears' history of issues and the circumstances surrounding Eberflus' firing apparently isn't enough to scare Johnson away, assuming the reports are true.
