TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- A Chinese satellite that no longer works caused the bright streaks Saturday night in the sky over North Mississippi that had people asking what was happening.
People started reaching out to WTVA 9 News after 10 p.m. about the unusual light show and shared pictures as well as videos of what they saw.
The commercial satellite was launched in 2016 and was reentering the Earth's atmosphere.
"People who predict these sort of things knew it would come down last night, but they didn't know for sure exactly where along its path that would occur," said WTVA chief meteorologist Matt Laubhan.
Laubhan added the satellite was moving about 17,000 miles an hour, which is much slower than the typical speed of a meteor.
He said it was unlikely that debris from the satellite made it to the ground.
NASA describes low Earth orbit as a space junkyard with millions of pieces flying around, including dead satellites.
"As we continue to send more and more stuff up in the space, entries like this will become more common," said Laubhan.
