During the Detroit Lions' 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills, running back David Montgomery suffered a torn MCL in his knee, which will require season-ending surgery.
Even after the injury, Montgomery was able to finish the game, as he had nine touches for 35 yards.
This is a devastating injury for the Lions, as they lead the NFC with a 12-2 record, and their backfield duo with Jahmyr Gibbs and Montgomery is a big part of their success.
To note, Montgomery was on pace to have a career-year as he put up 775 yards (4.2 yards per carry) and 12 touchdowns in 14 games this season. Not to mention, he was also involved in the receiving game, as he had 36 catches for 341 yards.
Gibbs will now take over the lead backfield role, which is certainly not too concerning, as he is one of the top backs in the NFL.
All in all, this ended up being a heartbreaking Week 15 for Detroit, as they not only lost the game, but also lost other key players such as: defensive tackle Alim McNeill (torn ACL), cornerback Carlton Davis (broken jaw), and cornerback Khalil Dorsey (leg fracture).
