HOUSTON -- A deadly multi-vehicle collision on the Katy Freeway near Highway 6 has resulted in a seven-hour traffic gridlock, blocking all eastbound lanes into Houston. The crash, which occurred around 3 p.m. Thursday, involved five vehicles, including a METRO bus, leaving one person dead and two others injured.
As of 10 p.m., there is no estimated time for the freeway to reopen, according to METRO police. The extensive backup has created a significant delay for commuters heading into Houston.
The medical examiner left the scene, but numerous first responders remain on site. Authorities are advising drivers to seek alternative routes and expect continued delays well into the night.
Nearly 500 people have died on surface streets and freeways in Harris County.
