WATCH: Shooting investigation shuts down parts of Highway 385, MPD says
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A man was shot on Highway 385 in East Memphis early Monday morning, police said.
Investigators said they believe the shooting stemmed from road rage.
Memphis Police (MPD) said officers responded just after 2 a.m. Monday to a shooting on Highway 385 near Kirby Parkway and found a man in the driver's seat of a car with a gunshot wound.
A passenger in the car told investigators that the driver was in the right lane of the highway when he "accidentally" merged onto the middle lane, leading to honking and "a very loud bang sound" from another vehicle.
The passenger told investigators that the gunfire came from someone in a gray four-door sedan, possibly a Nissan. The driver who was shot then drove his car into the highway's left shoulder before crashing into a concrete barrier.
The passenger said he "was in fear of his life" and left the scene to call 911, according to police. He returned to crash site after officers' arrival and started investigating.
Police said the driver suffered critical injuries.
