Beni Gras-Thompson of Roanoke won the women's age 50-54 group at the Ironman 70.3 world triathlon championships last weekend in Taupo, New Zealand.
Gras-Thompson, 53, had a cumulative time of 4:49.01. Her time in the 1.2-mile swimming portion was 33:06. Her time in the 56-mile bike race was 2:30.57. Her time for the 13.1-mile run was 1:37.55.
She successfully defended the title in the women's age 50-54 group that she won at the 2023 Ironman 70.3 world triathlon championships in Finland. She also won that age group in the delayed 2021 Ironman 70.3 world championships, which were held in May 2022 in Utah. She took sixth in her age group later that year at the 2022 Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Hawaii.
More than 6,200 athletes from 119 different countries, regions and territories competed in last weekend's championships.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
No. 13 W&L 75, Pacific (Ore.) 64
Mary Schleusner had 23 points, 28 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and four steals to lead the Generals (6-1) past the host Boxers (2-5) on Sunday night in Forest Grove, Oregon.
Schleusner snared the 1,000th rebound of her career. The junior now has 1,019 career rebounds.
Quinn McGuinness tallied 20 points for W&L, while Elka Prechel added 12 points and four 3-pointers.
W&L scored the first 11 points of the game.
